Engineer the future: new programs in Materials & Energy Sciences and AI for Medicine
Bill Harrington, UofL professor for the online Master of Engineering in Engineering Management (MEEM) program, talks below about the value of the EM 676 Effective Leadership industrial engineering course for MEEM students.
Effective Leadership (EM 676) is a course designed to bring focus to one’s leadership journey. The course begins with each student developing a personal vision statement after reflecting on personal values, purpose, and aspiration as they pertain to career and life in general.
Throughout the course, students explore how they will grow toward their ideal selves by using Intentional Change Theory, which was developed by Richard Boyatzis, a leading researcher in the field of Organizational Development. This work culminates in the final project.
Along the way, challenging leadership topics are covered to help students identify ways in which they can grow. These topics include emotional intelligence, setting corporate and departmental vision, change management, performance improvement, sourcing decisions, and leading thoughtfully through a merger or acquisition.
The common theme in all of these topics is that they involve aspects of leading others. Students who have completed Effective Leadership have consistently shared how the course has helped them better define and approach their career objectives.
As the instructor, I find great joy in listening to students and serving in many ways as a career coach.
